Sanctuary Webisode 1

Introducing Helen Magnus

Sanctuary is the new series of 'webisodes' from Damian Kindler, of Stargate SG-1 and Stargate:Atlantis, featuring Amanda Tapping and David Hewlett from that series.

The first episode of Sanctuary opens in London’s Whitechapel district in 1888 – the viewer is in Jack the Ripper territory. This is either a sign of cliché, or that the director is looking to save time by signposting a visual shortcut – Bad Things Are About To Happen.

The shortcut is enhanced by the music, which is eerie and haunting.

Sure enough, a streetwalker is so busy calling out in a curiously antipodean accent to two men passing that she does see a light flare in the darkness, and a hiss, as if the air is readjusting.

“Still at it, Molly?” A sepulchral voice enquires from the darkness. A clearly startled Molly refers to him by name – Mr. Drewitt.

As he steps toward her, drawing a sword-stick behind his back, a woman’s voice calls out, “John! This stops here!”

Far from discomfited, John appears to relish the two women meeting, as the music builds, and out of the shadows walks the woman he introduces his former fiancée, Dr. Helen Magnus, played by Amanda Tapping.

Before Helen can approach, John has Molly in a neck-lock; he admits to killing seven whores. “How could killing one more make the slightest difference?” Nonetheless, he appears to be about to let her go in response to Helen’s pleading, when he slits her throat. As Helen fires on him, he vanishes.

Cut to Old City, present day. A black & white has responded to a call. Their suspicions aroused, the officers force their way in, to be confronted by a bloodbath. A child is huddling under the bed in the spare room. When persuasion fails, one of the officers tries to drag him out, when he falls back, dead, with a wound to his forehead. The child stands, and the viewer sees his hand stretching, becoming something snake-like, but with multiple mouths.

In Old City hospital, a murder suspect (David Hewlett) is brought in by a team of policeman for treatment. Will Zimmerman (Robin Dunne) is the intern on duty. Larry Tolson is a former patient of his, and a man who has served twelve years for the murder of his foster-parents. Tolson tells Zimmerman of the child, and he manages to persuade the detective to look elsewhere without giving the truth away.

Outside the scene is watched by a nurse and Helen, now in modern dress. Helen is working in the morgue, and she takes something small and glowing from one of the dead policeman, who has had his brain removed.

At the end of the episode, she approaches Zimmerman, and offers him her card.

“Who are you?” he asks.

“A friend,” she replies. “I hope.”
