"Heroes" presents the individuals' struggle with their newly discovered superpower as well as with the invisible powers that control their lives.

NBC’s popular sci-fi series, “Heroes,” will begin its third season on September 22. The story line contains not one or two, but many heroes (people with superhuman powers) who constantly find themselves connected to each other trying to find out their purpose in life and uncover the reason behind their connectedness.

Season One, Genesis

The first season titled “Genesis” aired in 2006 and introduced the characters and their roles in this complicated storyline. We met Hiro Nakamura from Japan who is capable of bending time-space and jump from one location to the next, from one time to the next often finding himself in the past or in the future. We also met the Petrelli Family, where Nathan has the ability to fly, Peter can borrow other heroes’ abilities and Angela Petrelli, the mother, who knows much more than anyone else about the reason behind all this, and does only get involved when necessary. Towards the end of the first season we learned that the connection among the random people with newly discovered special powers is hidden in their genes.

During the first season we met other characters who began to investigate the unusual powers. Mohinder Suresh, an Indian geneticist discovers the connection between his father’s research and the special abilities and realizes that his father was murdered because of this project. Doctor Suresh is not the only one who gets involved in this due to personal feelings for someone. Noah Bennet, whose adopted daughter is one of the heroes, dedicates his life to protect Claire Bennet (Hayden Panettiere), but on the professional level he leads a secret organization known only as the "Company,” whose job is to find and retain every single human with special powers.

In the first season we also met Sylar, the ultimate bad guy, who is hunting the heroes down to kill them and to take their powers. Just to add one more twist to the already complicated storyline, Sylar begins to travel with Doctor Surash, the ultimate good guy to find the remaining people with powers. This is the stage where it is still somewhat clear who is a good guy and whose intentions are bad, but this is about to change with the second and third seasons.

Season Two, Generations

The second season titled “Generations” and the main plot arc dealt with the Company and its research on the Shanti virus discovered by Doctor Surash’s father. This research is explored through the Company's founders, whose identities are revealed, as well as through the effects of various strains of the virus on others. The second season sheds the light on the question of why do the heroes have those superpowers. The extraordinary abilities such as being able to walk through walls, having an alter-ego with an extreme strength to fight, the ability to fly, and the ability to heal are just a few of the heroes surprising powers which connects them.

Season Three, Villains

The third season titled “Villains” will bring many unexpected twists. The line between good and evil will disappear as the viewers will not be sure anymore about who is good and who is bad and who is exactly running the show. The first episode of the season will have the future Claire attacking future Peter. We will also learn about a secret facility called Level 5 where the dangerous heroes are kept and from which they suddenly escape. As good guys turn into bad guys the new story line, the villains will last for thirteen episodes and will confuse all viewers about their heroes.

One of the reasons why “Heroes” is such a huge success is that it raises the fundamental question of what is the individual’s purpose in life and suggests that there are always a few invisible well-connected powerful people who are actually running the show. Wrapped into an entertaining story, creator Tim Kring shows that the real struggles is not among individuals in their every-day lives, but rather among a small number of individuals who are aware of the controlling power and reach the point where they decide to get rid of it. Kring does a very good job of building complex characters and twisting the story line to keep the viewers interested and entertained. The next 3 seasons will bring new twists and surprises for the Heroes’ fans.
