Better Halves, episode 6 of Heroes, has D.L. (Leonard Roberts) take centre stage, as the viewer learns the truth about D.L., and his relationship with Niki and son Micah.
The major characters in Heroes continue to slowly but surely converge, but the pace of the plot steps up significantly. The episode opens with D.L. (Leonard Roberts) emerging from the wall in Niki’s home where he has hidden himself – D.L. is able to pass through solid matter. Niki nearly turns him in, but thinks better of it.
Hiro and Ando set off for New York, but before they can leave, they are stopped by the same gambler that they attempted to cheat before; he has them play a game for him, but when the two Japanese step outside for a moment, they hear the screams of the other men as an unknown assailant massacres them; Hiro is afterwards ashamed that he is unable to face going out there. He tries to call Isaac Mendez, but Peter picks up the phone this time. “Save the cheerleader; save the world,” Peter tells him, and Hiro is cheered.
As Mr. Bennett sets up a meeting for his daughter Claire with her biological parents, she hopes that questions about her newfound indestructibility can be answered. However, after a futile meeting in which she gets no clues about her powers, when the parents are outside, Bennett thanks them and it’s clear that they are simply actors playing a part.
Suresh says goodbye to Eden. She is unable to persuade him to stay -- instead he intends to return to India to bury his father. Later she talks to Mr. Bennett on the phone, and tells him everything that Peter and Isaac told a skeptical Suresh, including Peter’s cryptic message to Hiro.
The episode climaxes where it began – with D.L. and Niki. D. L. wants Niki and Micah – on whom he dotes, and the affection is clearly returned – to go away with him. He plans to go to a gambler and reclaim a debt, but when they go there, someone has killed the men – they are the same high-rollers against whom Hiro was conscripted.
Then evil twin Jessica talks to Niki from the mirror – it is she who killed the men in the garage and the gamblers. At Jessica’s instigation, Niki fetches down the proceeds from D.L.’s robbery from where she has stashed it. However D.L. surprises her and realizes that she killed his partners and framed him for the robbery/murder of two million dollars. Jessica hurls him across the room, but he is able to embed himself in the wall, and surprises her – the episode ends with him pushing his hand through her chest, and leaving her lying on the floor.
Heroes continues to build slowly, languidly, but by episode 6, the pace has quickened.
